The Creativity Shell is a nonprofit organization on a mission to use creative trades to educate and inspire the next generation of makers. Our organization teaches classes such as sewing/textile arts, cooking, building and other creative trades to students in our studios, libraries, schools, ABA therapy centers, the juvenile justice system as well as shelters that rescue children from homelessness and human trafficking. All classes are designed to teach children essential life skills, practical skills and positive mental health coping skills.
There is no “one size fits all” method to education! As the use of technology continues to increase throughout the education system, the value of trades decrease. At the Creativity Shell, we believe that teaching our children the trades we know and use today will help them continue to thrive as a generation of makers instead of a generation of buyers.

As she got older, she helped her create special occasion dresses for Prom and Homecoming.
When Sandi went to college, she worked at the costume department at Texas State and was proud to see her work on the actors that performed on stage.
After college, she perused a teaching career and taught in public schools for 19 years where she enjoyed working with children of various age groups.
By working at the Creativity Shell, she gets to combine both passions to teach sewing to children and teenagers in a creative setting.

Leah Arfele attended University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work and is a Licensed Master Social Worker with a degree in Clinical Practice and specialization in Behavioral Health. Leah has served several vulnerable populations in her career but her plans shifted when she unexpectedly gained custody of 4 children and became a Mom. This was the catalyst for Leah to explore her creative passions which led to her becoming a professional mermaid, making and selling her own costumes, and teaching sustainable and re-purposed crafting classes. The Creativity Shell’s mission resonates with Leah’s own values in that we view arts and trade skills as tools for personal growth and emphasize the importance of developing practical life skills through hands-on training that increases a person’s confidence and opportunities.
